University of Maryland
Maryland Day: Explore Our World!
Program Policies

Space and Facility Reservation Policy:
All campus facilities and spaces are reserved for Maryland Day, held annually on the last Saturday in April. Non-Maryland Day activities are prohibited between 10 AM and 5PM.

Rationale:
Resources for parking, room reservations, public safety, and traffic control are devoted to the considerable number of visitors that day.

Exceptions: On the rare occasion that an unrelated activity must be held on Maryland Day, a request from the appropriate dean or vice president must be forwarded to the Vice President of University Relations and the Maryland Day Steering Committee, for consideration and resolution. Requests should be made no later than January 3 in order to consider facility and parking implications.

Free Activities Policy:
All Maryland Day activities are free of charge on Maryland Day. Fees for services, programs, or admission are prohibited. Sales of merchandise are restricted to those campus operations that normally process retail transactions.

Rationale:
The program is explicitly designed to offer the community a fun, free day for families to meet students, faculty and staff; explore campus; and discover more about their State Flagship University. In addition, informal and non-secure money transactions would create concerns about criminal activity and distract public safety staff from other identified priorities on Maryland Day.

Exceptions:
Only approved campus retailers including the University Book Store, the Comcast Center store, and respective Dining Services´ sites are equipped to securely manage transactions and approved to sell products. In addition, Ag Day programs that started before Maryland Day (such as the alumni breakfast) will be permitted.

Fundraising Policy:
Fundraising of any kind is prohibited on Maryland Day. This includes bake sales and book sales for the benefit of sponsoring groups.

Rationale:
The day is focused on friend-raising instead of fundraising. It is inconsistent with the goals of Maryland Day to recoup the cost of Maryland Day programs by raising funds from visitors. In addition, informal and non-secure money transactions would create concerns about criminal activity and distract public safety staff from other identified priorities on Maryland Day.

Exceptions:
A request from the appropriate dean or vice president must be forwarded to the to the Vice President of University Relations and the Maryland Day Steering Committee for consideration and resolution. Requests must be received by January 3 to address considerations for the printed program.

Food Distribution Policy:
All food distributed on Maryland Day is limited to campus retailers, which operate within state and county health codes. All other food distribution is prohibited.

Rationale:
A safe environment for all visitors is a priority. This includes consideration of food safety.

Exceptions:
Established traditions of the Ag Day program (that started before Maryland Day) will be permitted.

Weapons Policy:
For most organizations, use or display of weapons of any kind are prohibited during Maryland Day. Activities sponsored by organizations that use weapons as a central component of their mission or purpose (e.g., Air Force and Army ROTC, Paintball Club) may display such weapons, but they may not be demonstrated, used or handled during Maryland Day. The sponsoring organization will be responsible for security and safety of weapons, making sure that all precautions are taken to ensure the safety of visitors.

Rationale:
A key audience for Maryland Day is families with young children. The program focuses on the core values of learning, exploration, and discovery. A safe environment is a priority on Maryland Day.

Exceptions:
Any department or organization wishing to display weapons must share their plans for display and safety precautions in description of program during event submission process. All program submissions proposing display of weapons will be reviewed and confirmed by January 3. No programs proposing to display weapons will be approved after this date.

Corporate Sponsor Policy:
Sponsorship for Maryland Day will be fostered with partners who have an existing vending or corporate relationship with the University, and the sponsorship will be linked to an appropriate program or activity that supports the Maryland Day mission of learning and exploration.

Most sponsorship for Maryland Day will be handled centrally, but all departments seeking corporate sponsors for their programs must receive University approval. Campus departments must coordinate their sponsorship plans with the Maryland Day staff and Corporate and Foundation Relations staff. All other non-campus organizations are prohibited.

Rationale:
Sponsorship with existing partners assists in defraying the costs of Maryland Day without passing those costs on to visitors or participating departments. The University screens all organizations interested in aligning with campus in order to coordinate sponsorship plans and monitor concerns about the program becoming inappropriately commercial.

Exceptions:
There are no exceptions.
